Refacing or Repainting vs. Replacing Your Kitchen Cabinets
The kitchen is usually the first place where people want to start when they remodel. Many times, people may want to keep the rest of the house the same, but they want to have a new kitchen. We spend so much time in our kitchens that we are very invested in how they look and function.
The cabinets take up the most real estate in your kitchen, and they have the biggest impact on the look and function of the kitchen. You can replace the cabinets entirely, or you can simple repaint or resurface them. How do you know which is the right choice for you? Here are a few things to consider:
Cost
The bottom line for many people is how much money a project is going to cost. All our homes would look just the way we wanted them to if money wasn’t an issue. So, many people make their final decisions based on what the costs will be.
The cost of replacing cabinets will be much more expensive than simply repainting them or replacing the doors or drawer fronts. Exactly how much the difference will be depends on the kind of materials chosen and the size of the kitchen, but replacing cabinets in Arizona is many times more expensive than the other two options.
Aesthetics
You can make a big difference to the aesthetics of your kitchen simply by repainting the cabinets. Imagine the change if you painted dark wood cabinets a bright white. You can further improve the look by changing out the hardware, including the knobs, handles, pulls, and hinges.
Repainting the cabinets won’t change the style though. If the cabinets are in good shape, you can get a new look by changing out the doors and drawer fronts. Unless you are able to find the same colors, you may need to combine refacing with repainting.
Of course, if you want to change the look and the functionality of the cabinets, such as by adding more space, your only option will be to replace the cabinets entirely. For example, you may want more drawers, or you may want pull-out spaces for pans or trash bins.
Time
Repainting or refacing your cabinets will take much less time than completely replacing your cabinets. You can repaint or reface in a day, while a total cabinet replacement could take several days or weeks, depending on the options you choose. While you may not mind having to wait a few days or weeks for your new kitchen to be finished, you may not have the time to take off from work or to have your kitchen be out of commission. You may also feel in more of a hurry if you are preparing your kitchen for a holiday celebration or other event.
Structure/storage
Refacing and repainting your cabinets only address the way they look. But those options don’t add more space for your pots and pans. And they don’t give you more cabinets when you currently have an excess of drawers. The only way to get the structure or the storage space you want is to replace your cabinets.
Fortunately, you have a lot of options when it comes to remodeling your kitchen. You can make a huge impact by starting with your cabinets. But if you don’t have the budget to completely replace your cabinets, or you don’t want to invest in such a huge project, you can also get big results through repainting or refacing your cabinets.
